US Utility Patent, 5,524,641 employs geodesic dome structures to improve the performance qualities of protective gear for both team and individual sports. Further, 19 associated claims offer advantages for protection or “cushioning” of any part of the human body from impact by outside forces, including gravity. Besides the shoulders and chest area, other areas that benefit from geodesic modification include: knee, elbow, face- mask, torso and groin protection, also, bike helmets,skating and team sport helmets and perhaps most significantly, shoes.

This novel application represents an entirely new set of design tools because it is the shape itself that possesses the special properties of performance. This technology is separate from advances that are typically sought via alternate, higher performance materials such as alloys or high tech laminates. It readily adapts and leverages the advantages of new materials, a transformation that improves the performance of the construction material itself, be it foam, plastic, laminate or alloy. I assert that this unique characteristic represents a new domain of “open architectural diversity”. The variety of shapes that are defined as geodesics from a macro to a micro level, serve as a multiplier of value for my intellectual property rights.
